Chinabank directors, senior management, and key officers of the Chinabank Group gathered for the Bank’s annual Corporate Governance Training, themed “Innovation with Integrity: Governing AI and Strengthening AML in an Evolving Financial Landscape,” on September 2 at the CBC head office in Makati City and via Zoom. The program focused on the importance of sound corporate governance, responsible AI adoption and effective anti-money laundering (AML) oversight amid a rapidly evolving financial and regulatory environment.
The training opened with an economic briefing by CBC Chief Economist Domini Velasquez, who shared insights on the country’s economic and market outlook amid slowing growth and persistent inflationary pressures. She discussed key economic trends, emerging risks, and opportunities that could shape the business environment in the coming years.
AMLC Executive Director Atty. Ronel Buenaventura then discussed the Board’s role in strengthening anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) oversight and compliance. He emphasized the importance of accountability and risk-based controls in addressing evolving financial crime threats and highlighted the banking sector’s role in supporting the country’s AML/CTT framework.
The program also tackled the growing role of artificial intelligence in the financial services industry, led by Atty. Edsel Tupaz, Head of Data Privacy, Cybersecurity, and AI Initiatives at Gorriceta Africa Cauton & Saavedra. He discussed AI’s applications in fraud detection, customer engagement, credit decisioning, and operational efficiency, stressing the need for sound governance, accountability, and board oversight to manage emerging risks.
In the final session, “From AI Experimentation to Business Value,” SGV Consulting Manager Criselle David discussed how organizations can move beyond pilot projects and translate AI investments into practical business value. She highlighted the importance of governance, clear ownership, and scalable adoption strategies in translating AI initiatives into business outcomes.
Organized by the Corporate Governance Division in collaboration with the Data Innovation and Artificial Intelligence Division, this year's training reaffirmed CBC’s commitment to strengthening corporate governance practices, promoting regulatory compliance, and responsibly adopting emerging technologies.
